SPARTA, Ky. –– For years my friends at Murray State University begged me to attend a NASCAR race. Every time I said no. Who wants to spend money to watch a bunch of stock cars drive in circles for three or four hours?
But in May I finally agreed to shell out 60 bucks to attend my first Sprint Cup race at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, a small community 55 miles from my hometown.
Going into race weekend, I didn’t expect much. I planned to enjoy the social aspect of the event before the race, and then I’d try to find something to keep my mind occupied while these stock cars circled the track for a seemingly endless amount of time.
After a fun day of tailgating Saturday, we entered the track at 6 p.m. so we could get to our seats before the 7:30 start time.
