DuPont Manual blanks Jags 3-0 in championship game

Heading into the 12th District Tournament championship game, the Mercy Academy girls soccer team had only shut out on its 2010 season resume - Aug. 26 at Floyd Central (IN). The Jaguars' second scoreless game of the season came Thursday against DuPont Manual High School, and ultimately cost Mercy the district title.

Playing at Male High School, the Jags were tested all night by the Crimsons and could not ever establish an offensive rhythm. With 15:48 to go in the first half, Manual's Elise Steinmetz knocked home a powerful goal, giving her team a 1-0 lead and what would hold up as the eventual game-winning goal.

Mercy, who defeated DuPont Manual 5-3 earliner in the season, was able to keep the deficit at 1-0 until halftime, but the second half was no better for Sam Hayward's Jaguars squad. Manual's Casey Whitfield scored twice after the half at the 34:17 and 23:29 marks, putting Mercy away.

There was some positive news for Mercy following the shutout loss. Not only will the Jags have a chance to redeem their loss next week in the regional tournament, but they also placed two girls on the All-District Tournament Team. Kaitlyn Golab and Hannah Konermann represented the blue and white on the team, joining Presentation Academy's Elizabeth Sherman and Shelby Minton.

Regional tournament pairings will be drawn and determined on Friday.
