McMurry rushes for 200-plus yards as Tigers roll

The frustrating losing streak continued for DuPont Manual on Friday Night, as the Crimsons lost for the 21st time in a row to St. Xavier High School, and the Tigers celebrated Senior Night on their home field winning 38-7.

St. X got 202 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns from La'Mont McMurry on the night and turned in their second consecutive strong defensive effort in the win.

With 4:34 left in the first quarter, St. X senior Scott Raque made a 42-yard field goal to make the score 3-0. After a Manual fumble with 3:03 left in the first quarter, senior DeVontae Beach was turned the mishap into points, and ran the ball into the endzone for the Tigers' first touchdown of the night.

Manual controlled the pace early in the second quarter, as Marcus Helm ran 56 yards with 10:06 left in the second quarter to score Manual’s only touchdown of the evening. St. X quickly turned the tide of the game and scored the next three touchdowns.  McMurry received the ball with 9:49 to go before halftime and completed a 60-yard touchdown run for St. X, stretching the lead to 17-7.

Minutes later, junior Matthew Wimpe caught a 26-yard pass from junior Quarterback Alex Mattingly to score the third St. X touchdown of the night. With seconds left in the second quarter, McMurry ran into the endzone for one more touchdown, giving X a 24-point halftime lead.

In the second half of play, Manual created some energy, as junior quarterback Luis Thompson connected with senior DarMonte Warr for a few long runs, but overall, St. X was able to stop any possible scoring with a strong wall and a couple interceptions in the third and fourth quarters. With 8:23 left in the game, Beach scored the final touchdown of the night, making the final score 38-7.

With this victory, St. X moved to 6-2 on the season, while Manual fell to 3-5. St. X resumes play next weekend at PRP.
