Defending champ SHA wins 12-0 over Fern Creek

Nine minutes into Sacred Heart Academy's 7th Region Tournament semifinal game against Fern Creek Monday evening, the Valkyries owned a 3-0 lead, had subbed out its entire starting lineup (with the exception of goalkeeper Maddie Peabody), and was well on its way to a defense of its three straight girls soccer state championships.

Caroline Wistrom scored two goals in the game's first three minutes and SHA rolled to a 12-0 victory over the Tigers, advancing to the regional tournament championship game on Wednesday against Assumption High School - a team SHA has already defeated twice this season by a total deficit of 7-0.

Following Wistrom's two goals, the rest of Chris Moore's Valkyrie team got in on the act. Eleanor Gabriel scored a pair of back-to-back goals of her own, striking with 32:24 and 20:24 to go in the first half, giving SHA a 4-0 lead. Two minutes after Gabriel's second goal, junior Emily Epley knocked in her team's fifth goal, and then provided an assist on Erin Feger's goal at the 17:46 mark, giving Sacred Heart a 6-0 lead.

Then Rachel Wimsatt scored two consecutve goals (14:33 and 12:49), followed by single goals from Lauren Brewer and Sarah Wells, and then a third pair of first half back-to-backers by Joanne Bodhaine with 3:33 and 1:49 remaining gave the Valkyries a dominating 12-0 advantage. Due to the "mercy rule," which calls for a game to be automatically called if one half of soccer has been played and one team is winning by ten or more goals, Sacred Heart earned the shortened-game victory.

Peabody earned the victory in goal, as she stopped the only shot that came her way all night early in the first half. She was replaced with just under 19 minutes to go in the first half by back up goalkeeper Callie Taylor. For the game, Sacred Heart took a blistering 31 shots on goal.

SHA, which has played the state's and arguably one of the nation's toughest schedules all season, made quick work of an overpowered Fern Creek team and prepared for its third showdown of the season with the Assumption Rockets.
