Beach leads Tigers to comeback victory

Saint Xavier High School senior lineback Devontae Beach has anchored the Tigers defense for most of the season, but his hybrid ability to contribute offensively came up big Friday night, as Beach scored two touchdowns and helped St. X overcome a 21-7 deficit, as the defending state champions came back to beat PRP 27-21.

Beach tied the game at 7-7 early with a 40-yard run and cut the PRP lead to 21-14 with an 11-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Luke Brohm in the third quarter. Senior running back La'mont McMurry tied the game at 21 on an eight-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, and St. X co-quarterback Alex Mattingly rushed in from one yard out to give the Tigers the lead and ultimately the win.

PRP (4-5) was led by QB Spencer Sumpter who accounted for two of the Panthers' three total touchdowns, including a one-yard run and a 65-yard touchdown pass to Dion Cummings that put PRP up 7-0 in the first quarter. Sumpter did have three interceptions in the game, including a crucial pick by Daylen Hall on fourth down late in the game.

St. Xavier moved to 7-2 on the season with the win and stayed unbeaten in District 3 play with the road victory. The Tigers wrap up its regular season next Saturday in northern Kentucky, as St. X travels to Class 5A Covington Catholic.
