Unbeaten Knights ranked atop men's basketball coaches poll

The Bellarmine University men's basketball team is the new No. 1 team in the National Association of Basketball Coaches/Division II Coaches poll after starting the season with a perfect 5-0 record.

The Knights are coming off two road victories over the weekend when they beat No. 18 Kentucky Wesleyan 78-75 and No. 20 Southern Indiana 69-60 to open up Great Lakes Valley Conference play. It is the first time since 1980 that Bellarmine has beaten the two schools on the road in the same season.

This also marks the first time that Bellarmine has held a No. 1 ranking in season in any sport. Last season, the men's basketball team was preseason No. 1 but lost the spot before the first week's polls came out.

The Knights are being led early on this season by Jeremy Kendle, who has earned back to back GLVC Player of the Week honors. He leads the GLVC in scoring at 22.6 points per game while also grabbing 4.6 rebounds and handing out 3.2 assists.

Regional foe Findlay is one spot behind the Knights at No. 2, followed by Winona State, West Liberty, and Montevallo. Bellarmine is not the only GLVC school ranked, as Kentucky Wesleyan is No. 18, Southern Indiana is No. 20, and Northern Kentucky is No. 23.

Cal Poly Pomona, the previous No. 1, fell all the way to No. 16 after dropping games against Cal-State Dominguez Hills and Cal-State L.A. last week.

Bellarmine returns to Knights Hall this weekend as they will host the 2010 Fern Valley Hotel Classic where they will play West Virginia State on Friday at 7:30 and the Indiana University-Southeast on Saturday also at 7:30.
