Mercy basketball junior answers the Questions

Each week, will be getting to know a new student-athlete from the area by asking him/her a series of 20 key questions - some in-depth, some lighthearted - that will provide insight into the thoughts and personalities of the boys and girls who are doing great things on and off the local courts, fields, tracks, and courses. Below are the "20 Key Questions," brought to you by Key Financial Mortgage LLC.

The calendar year of 2009-10 will be a tough one for Mercy Academy junior Courtney Roush to top.

A member and contributor for the Jaguars' state champion volleyball team, Roush was also an instrumental piece of Mercy's run in the KHSAA girls basketball Sweet 16 and eventual state title during her sophomore year. Two state rings in one athletic year? A rare feat for any competitor.

This year, as an encore, Roush helped the volleyball team climb the national ranking polls and reach the Kentucky state title game (and eventually finish runner-up after a loss to Assumption), and has been an integral factor in leading the Jaguar b-ball team to a 3-0 start in defense of its state championship. She grabbed 13 rebounds in a single game earlier this season and helped her team win a big game on the road this past week, as the Jags defeated Lexington Catholic in double overtime.

Roush, who says she likes to joke and make people laugh, also has a twin sister who plays with her on the basketball team. And to make things even more difficult for the average on-looker, the Roush sisters (Courtney and Christine) wear very similar jersey numbers: No. 12 and No. 21.

Currently sporting a 4.0 GPA at Mercy, Courtney Roush has begun the process of looking at colleges, and says she is considering the University of Kentucky, Western Kentucky University, and possibly Lehigh University (Bethlehem, PA) to continue her basketball career. A leader on and off the courts, Roush is an exceptional student-athete and recently took time out to answer the "20 Key Questions."

1. What is your favorite pump up music on game day?

I don't really listen to music before a game. The pump up music that I listen to is the music playing when I do warm ups.

2. What is your ideal meal/snack before a game?

A Jimmy John's club sandwich with BBQ chips and big bottle of Gatorade.

3. Cats or Cards?

My house is divided so I support both teams, but I support UK more.

4. Which athlete do you look up to on a college/professional level?

Angel McCaughtry. I like her so much because she works so hard to get where she is today and she is good enough to play with the boys.

5. What is your favorite movie quote?

"First, I traveled through the seven layers of the candy cane forest, past the sea of twirly-swirly gumdrops, and then, I walked through the Lincoln Tunnel." - Buddy the Elf from Elf

6. How does your faith impact your approach to sports?

My coach has to change practices on Sundays so my sister and I can attend church. Also, my faith has impacted me to practice good sportsmanship when I am on the court.

I'm motivated by the love of the game. Basketball's in my blood and I just want to get better every time I hit the court.

8. All time favorite board game?

CLUE! I love solving a good mystery.
