Rockets, Jaguars, Valkyries all playing in tournament

Three Louisville area Catholic teams will have a shot at the 2011 girls LIT this week, as Assumption High School, Mercy Academy and Sacred Heart Academy will all compete in the annual tournament.

Assumption, which will kick off tournament play against Ballard High School on Tuesday afternoon, currently sports a 9-8 record and is 3-4 against regional competition. The Rockets have won four of its past five games and have been continuing to improve under Head Coach Stephanie Greathouse, who took over the team before the first of the year.

Led by senior guard Maggie Hartlage, junior guard Becca Durbin and sophomore forward Katie Friedrich, Assumption will take on the Bruins (7-10) and would play No. 1 duPont Manual on Wednesday should they get past Ballard. Assumption lost to Ballard 49-46 back on Nov. 30 - the Rockets' first game of the season.

Mercy Academy (15-3) has won five of its past six games since returning home from its holiday tournament and Florida, and earned a convincing win over the weekend agaisnt Owensboro Catholic, as the Jaguars beat the Aces by 30 points in the Raatz Fence Classic, which was hosted by Mercy.

The Jags, who are the defending Kentucky state champions, are led by seniors Juliann Miller and Lauren Faris, the Roush sisters - juniors Courtney and Christine - and sophomore Whitney Hartlage. Mercy earned a bye into the second round and will take on the winner of Bullitt East-Fern Creek on Wednesday at 5pm.

Mercy has not faced either of those teams this season.

Sacred Heart Academy, who also picked up a nice win at Saturday's Raatz Fence Classic (53-50 over Perry County Central), has won five out of its last six games and will earn its 15th win of the season with its next victory. The Valkyries also earned a bye into the second round and awaits the winner of Jeffersontown-Eastern in Wednesday evening's finale.

The Valkyries are led by a veteran group, as its starting lineup features five experienced seniors. SHA center Morgan Clemons is averaging a near double-double (13.2 points and 9.9 rebounds).
