Several local grads are excelling at the collegiate level

With the college football season reaching its halfway point, coaches and teams are finding out who the leaders and contributors are in all aspects on the field.

And of those key players in the local and national collegiate ranks, several are Louisville-area Catholic high school graduates who excelled locally before heading to the next level.

Rolandan "Deuce" Finch, Boston College sophomore RB (St. Xavier)

Despite a rough season thus far for BC, Finch has excelled in his sophomore season with the Golden Eagles and finds himself second on the team in rushing yards (195), carries (41) and touchdowns (1) after five games played. Finch, who was the 2008 Gatorade Player of the Year as a running back for St. Xavier High School, ran for 64 yards on 11 carries during Boston College's lone win - a 45-14 victory over UMass on Sept. 24. But his best game of the year came last week at Clemson, as the RB ran for 86 yards on 19 carries and his first TD of the season.

Garrit Leicht, Princeton University freshman LB (DeSales)

At six-foot-two and 235 pounds, Leicht has switched to linebacker at Princeton after a stellar career as a running back at DeSales in Louisville. In three games played, Leicht has six total tackles and has also been a key component on the Tigers' first-string special teams unit. The Ivy League team is currently 1-3.

Ryan Tydlacka, University of Kentucky senior P/K (Trinity)

With a struggling UK offense, Tydlacka has had an increased workload and excelled in role as punter for the Wildcats. In six games, the Trinity grad Tydlacka has booted 41 punts for a total of 1,798 yards, which is an average of 43.9 yards per kick. His long punt for the season is 64 yards and he was named Honorable Mention National Punter of the Week during the first week of the season. Kentucky is on a four-game losing streak and has a Bye this week.

Tim Phillips, Central Michigan sophomore RB (Trinity)

A Mechanical Engineering major at CMU, Phillips leads the Chippewas with 46 carries and is second in rushing yards with 181. Phillips rushed for a career-high 84 yards and a career-long 28 yard touchdown run (longest rushing play of the season for Central Michigan) on 11 carries and caught a career-high three passes for 21 yards at Western Michigan on Sept. 17. He also has eight catches for 55 yards for a 2-4 CMU team.

Will Stein, University of Louisville junior QB (Trinity)

After beginning the season as UofL's starting quarterback, Stein was knocked out of the game against Kentucky on Sept. 17 with an injury and has not played during the Cardinals' past two contests against Marshall and North Carolina. During the three games he did play in, the five-foot-ten Stein was 49-of-79 for 615 passing yards and five touchdowns.

Ronnie McDermott, Morehead State University senior WR (Holy Cross)

After leading MSU in receiving last year as a junior, the Holy Cross High School grad McDermott is having another consistent season for the Ohio Valley Conference Eagles. In six games, McDemott is fourth in receptions (22), receiving yards (256) and touchdowns (2). He is averaging 42.7 yards per game. His best game of the season thus far was an eight-catch, 96-yard effort in a Morehead loss at Illinois State.

Victor "Vic" Anderson, University of Louisville senior RB (St. Xavier)

Named the "face of the program" by Head Coach Charlie Strong before the season, Anderson has bounced back from injury as one of the primary offensive threats for Louisville. On 36 carries this season, Anderson has picked up 169 rushing yards and a touchdown, but it is his work in the air that has made him a versatile threat. He also has 92 receiving yards and a touchdown on 11 catches and is averaging more than 60 all-purpose yards per game.

Scott Radcliff, University of Louisville junior WR (Trinity)

A member of a talented Louisville stable of receivers, Radcliff started the season with a bang against Murray State but has seen limited involvement as the season has progressed. He has four catches for 40 yards and a touchdown from the wideout position and leads the team in punt return average with 7.8 yards per return this year.

Luke McDermott, University of Kentucky senior DT (Trinity)

With nine tackles and a sack, McDermott has been steady on the defensive line for Joker Phillips' Kentucky team. McDermott was named Co-Southeastern Conference Defensive Lineman of the Week for his performance.McDermott was impressive upfront for the Wildcats, helping limit Western Kentucky to three points and 234 total yards during that outing.

Cameron Smyth, Georgetown College junior QB (Trinity)

In limited action this season, Smyth is 7-of-15 for 102 yards and one touchdown, and has a passing efficiency rating of 99.1 percent. His best game was on Sept. 24 when Smyth was 4-of-9 for 40 yards, including a long-pass of 18 yards against Shorter. The Tigers are 5-0 on the season.
