Younger sister of Garvey brothers making her own name

While the Garvey Brothers (Mercy Academy head coach Todd and Sacred Heart Academy head coach Eric) certainly carry the family name in volleyball circles locally, there is a third member of the clan who is also making waves on the court.

Their younger sister, Casey, is a junior at Samford University and currently ranks 2nd in all of NCAA Division I in assists. Through 26 matches and 87 sets played this season, Casey Garvey has racked up 1,050 assists, which comes out to 12.07 per set. Those numbers have led the Samford Bulldogs to a 23-3 record overall and 10-2 in the Southern Conference.

She is second in the statistical category behind Northern Illinois senior Kristin Hoffman, who has 1,111 assists (12.34 per set) this season.

Casey, who led the Mercy Jaguars to the KHSAA state championship and to a national runner-up finish in 2008, was the setter for the black team in the inaugural Under-Armour All-America High School Volleyball Match and Skills Competition in 2008. She was also the Gatorade Player of the Year that same year.

She is also a local St. Pius X alum.

Eric and Todd played volleyball at University of Kentucky and are considered two of the top high school coaches in the region.

Samford has four games remaining on its regular season schedule before beginning conference tournament play on Nov. 19.
