Women's soccer team ends season in heartbreaking fashion

The No. 18 Bellarmine University women's soccer team lost a heartbreaking match to the ninth-ranked Northern Kentucky Norse on Sunday 1-0 in double-overtime to end their run in the NCAA Tournament.

The winds were swirling constantly, as neither team could get off a solid shot in the opening half. The Knights nearly struck in the 33rd minute as a cross to junior Alex Kowalski was just out of reach before harmlessly rolling out of bounds.

The score remained at zero through the break and all the way through the second half. Bellarmine keeper Amy Kunowski kept the game in a scoreless tie at the 81:13 mark, making a huge save after NKU's Hannah Wissel snuck behind the defense to get off a clear shot on goal.

Overtime was much of the same, as both teams were driven by their defenses, not allowing much offense to get going.

The game's lone goal came in the 118th minute as a loose ball was picked up by Megan Frye who fired it into the top left corner of the goal for the game winner.

The game ends Bellarmine's season where they won a school record 16 games and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for only the second time in school history. Four members were named to the GLVC all-conference team and Coach Jonathan Velotta was named the GLVC Coach of the Year.
