Rockets defeat Fern Creek 62-49 behind Hartlage's 16

After a sluggish start to the game, the Assumption Rockets found their rhythm late in the second quarter to take down the visiting Fern Creek Tigers 62-49 on Tuesday night.

Though the Rockets trailed by as many as nine points in the first quarter, Assumption found a rally behind senior Maggie Hartlage and point guard Dee Dee Sliter in this 26th district matchup.

Fern Creek star and Wright State-signee Teonia McCune had a game-high 20 points and dominated the paint for much of the first half. Assumption adjusted to McCune’s gameplan, however, and implemented a double team against her, which provided the foundation for the Rocket rally and eventual lead going into the second half.

The first half would not end without its drama, though.

With 2:15 left in the first half and the Rockets down by three points, Asia Grigsby of Fern Creek committed an offensive foul, followed immediately by a technical foul after Grigsby had a few extra words of disagreement for the referee. Morgan Foley of Assumption made both free throws, and on the ensuing possession, Rocket Kelsey Kaiser made a jump shot to give AHS the 21-20 lead.  Assumption would go into the half with a 23-22 lead.

From the start of the 3rd quarter, Assumption began to control the game. And despite the Rockets missing all of their 3-point attempts in the first half, they started to fall in the second half as Becca Durbin and Brandy Hunter each nailed a trey in the third period. Assumption extended its lead to ten going into the fourth quarter, 41-31.

The Rockets would lead by as many as 15 throughout the last quarter of the game. With the help of a coach’s technical against Fern Creek with 5:07 left to play in the quarter and an increase in percentage of made shots, Assumption’s offense took over. They would hold onto the ball and play perfect possession in the last minute of the game to win the game 62-49.

Hartlage had a team-high 16 points for the game, while Sliter, Foley and Hunter would also score in double figures for Assumption.

“We are really pleased," said Assumption Head Coach Stephanie Greathouse after the game. "Fern Creek is a good team, they’re in our district and this game was for the number one seed in the district (tournament). So, it was pretty important for us to get that number one seed and get that position in the district tournament bracket. I was concerned because they beat the same teams we have and they lost to the same teams we have. I thought it was going to be a close game and I thought my kids really stepped up and did a great job.”

With tonight’s win, the Rockets record now stands at 11-9 for the year and a perfect 3-0 in the district. Assumpiton's next game is Feb. 3 - a makeup game at Atherton that was snowed out several weeks ago. Tip for that game will be 6pm.
