Young Cougars take down Valley 70-24 in district semis

The Holy Cross Lady Cougars used scoring from nine different players to get another victory against Valley High School, and advanced to the 21st District Tournament finals with a 70-24 win over the Vikings on Wednesday night.

From the start, it wasn’t much of a contest as Holy Cross took an early lead and never looked back. In the first quarter, the Cougars went up by as many as 12 points before closing out the first eight minutes of play leading 16-6. The Lady Vikings had a tough shooting night from the field, as four of their six points came from free throws.

The second quarter was much of the same for both teams, as Holy Cross dominated both sides of the ball. Cougars junior Kim Mingus had a quarter-high eight points (14 total for the first half) and the Lady Cougars took a 29-point lead into halftime with a score of 39-10.

Combined with the stingy basket for Valley, the Lady Vikings could never find an offensive rhythm thanks to swarming defense by Holy Cross.

Holy Cross started the second half going on a 6-1 run to extend their lead to 34 points. Although the nets were more forgiving for Valley in the third quarter, their effort was dwarfed by that of the Lady Cougars. They outscored Valley 14-7 in the third quarter to take a 53-17 lead into the final period of the game.

Two freshman guards - Josie Hockman and Taylor Weber - found their game in the fourth quarter, as the duo combined for 15 of the final 17 points scored in the game. The Lady Cougars also took care of business from the free throw line as they were a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe for the game.

Holy Cross also shot an impressive 54 percent from the field during the matchup.

In addition to nine total players scoring, Holy Cross got double-digit scoring from juniors Julie Skaggs and Kim Mingus. Maya Hardin got a game-high eight rebounds for Holy Cross.

Taking their 20-7 record into Friday night’s district title game, the Lady Cougars will play Pleasure Ridge Park for the 21st District championship at 6pm at Western High School.
