Rockets settle for district runner-up with loss to Fern Creek

Assumption High School basketball Head Coach Stephanie Greathouse is looking to buy a basket, if you know of any out there.

Her young Rockets couldn’t dial in the range against Fern Creek High School in the girls 26th District Tournament Championship game Friday night, losing 54-39.

“We had every open look we wanted on every possession and not one of them went in,” said Greathouse. “What can you do about that? Usually somebody will step up and hit one and it will get contagious but not tonight.”

The Rockets, who have only one senior and two juniors, fell behind the Tigers 6-0 but recovered early. A strong takeaway by junior Morgan Foley led to a layup by senior Maggie Hartlage to tie the game at 6-6. Hartlage led the Rockets with 14 points.

Assumption did hit five 3-pointers in the game. Sophomore Brandy Hunter hit one to give the Rockets their first lead of the game at 9-8.

They built a four-point lead, spreading the ball around during one possession which went from sophomore Kelsey Kaiser to Hunter to sophomore Katie Friedrich to sophomore Alyx White who drilled a long ball.

But the Tigers raced into transition. Senior Asia Grigsby raced down the court for a layup as time expired to tie the game after the first quarter, 14-14.

The second quarter is when the lid sat on the hoop. Assumption couldn’t knock down anything from the outside and struggled to get inside to face Fern Creek’s lanky six-foot-five senior Teonia McCune.

The Rockets managed only two points, those on a jumper by sophomore Dee Dee Sliter after Assumption had fallen behind by 12 points.

Grigsby scored eight more for the Tigers and finished with a game high 24 points. Fern Creek led Assumption 28-16 at the half.

Hartlage scored all seven of Assumption’s points in the third quarter, but the Rockets couldn’t trim anything off of the 12 point deficit. Fern Creek started to pull away in the fourth quarter when senior Holly Bernard hit a three-pointer to give the Tigers a 15 point lead.

It grew to 17 points on a basket inside by the tall McCune. She scored 13 points for Fern Creek.

Assumption kept fighting. Sliter’s steal and basket cut the deficit to 11. Junior Becca Durbin hit a jumper with three minutes to go to get the Rockets within ten points.

The Rockets (15-14) beat Fern Creek three weeks ago, but couldn’t muster a comeback in this one.

Three Rockets were named to the 26th District All-Tournament Team, as Hartlage, Fredrich, and Sliter all represented AHS.

Assumption will get back to work for next week’s Seventh Region tournament. They will play either duPont Manual, Sacred Heart or Christian Academy of Louisville.

“I told them all you can do is forget about it,” Greathouse said. “Last year a district runner up won state (Mercy).  There’s still hope. We have to hit shots.”

Assumption's regional opponent(s) will be determined during the regional tournament draw on Saturday afternoon.
