Rockets tap former WKU coach to take over basketball team

Assumption High School has named former Western Kentucky University women’s basketball coach Steve Small as the new head basketball coach for the 2011-2012 season.

Small comes to Assumption after compiling an 89-39 (.695) record as head women’s basketball coach for the Hilltoppers from 1997-2001.  Prior to taking the head coaching position, Coach Small helped WKU amass a 410-168 (.709) record with 15 trips to the NCAA tournament and three Final Four appearances as the assistant/associate head coach to the legendary Paul Sanderford at WKU.

In an announcement to faculty and staff on April 15, Assumption athletic director Bobby Blair expressed the great opportunity that the school is getting in Coach Small.

“His basketball pedigree is outstanding, but we are getting a tremendous person and personality," said Blair. "I cannot tell you how exciting this is for Assumption High School, our basketball program, our community, and most importantly, our girls.  Coach Small’s unbelievable influence will be felt far and wide.”

Small began his head coaching career at Mt. Washington Middle School in 1972, moving to high school athletics in 1980 to coach at Bullitt East High School.  In four years he coached the Chargers to regional quarter-finals, two district championships, and a regional second place finish.

Most recently, Small has been acting as athletic director for the Basketball Academy since 2007.  There, he organized leagues, clinics, tournaments, and lessons.
