Despite overtime loss, All Stars have great experience

Just over two months ago, on April 16, over 250 local 7th graders (who will be 8th graders in Fall 2011) attended and went through a tryout process at the University of Louisville Trager Indoor Center that involved a college/NFL style combine and evaluation process with high school and college coaches, in an attempt to make the Kentucky Future Stars football team.

This "Futures" team would then eventually play the Tennessee Future Stars squad in an exhibition game.

The Kentucky roster was finalized with 43 players representing the state. The players from the local community who were selected to the team were Jay Nunamaker, Justin Karem, A.J. Breit, Tucker Donlon, Vincent Lococo, Bryant Colvin, Conner Foos, David Daniels, Max Martin, Santo Biddix, Chase Rowan, Michael Heistand.

These players reported to Eastern Kentucky University on June 7th for a week of practice, competition, and preparation for the game to be played on the campus of Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN on June 11th.  During the week of practice, the players stayed in the dorms at EKU, practiced three times each day and attended offense/defense team meetings with the coaching staff from morning to night.

As for the actual KY-TN All-Star Game, it was nothing short of entertaining.  Kentucky  jumped out to an early 13-0 lead, which included a 55-yard fumble return for a touchdown by St. Edward's Vincent Lococo, who went on to receive the Defensive MVP award for Kentucky following the game.

In the process of marching down the field for Kentucky’s third touchdown, the game was suspended for an hour due to weather conditions.  After the lightning delay, a Kentucky All-Star fumble while crossing the goalline rolled out of the end zone for a touchback giving the ball back to the Tennessee All-Stars. Tennessee capitalized and eventually took a 19-13 lead late in the 4th quarter.

The Kentucky team came back and scored at the end of regulation, but the potentially game-winning PAT was missed.

In overtime, Tennessee scored first and made its PAT; Kentucky scored to answer, but its PAT was blocked, resulting in a final score of 26-25 in favor of Tennessee.

The 2012 games are expected to be played in Kentucky with either Papa John's Cardinal Stadium (UofL) or Commonwealth Stadium (UK) serving as possible hosts.
