Talented group of Tigers sign with major programs in five sports

Six St. Xavier athletes that play five different sports signed their letters of intent at the Brother John Wills Sports Activities Center Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s real exciting,” said St. Xavier Athletic Director Alan Donhoff. “It’s always great to see students get an opportunity to realize their dreams. We have six representing our entire program right now. We’re going to have more in the spring so the February signing period will be another big day. But to have guys that give four years to their high school and to have an opportunity to continue something they love is really special.”

Golfers Cooper Musselman and Stephen Stallings Jr. both signed with the University of Kentucky. The duo played on the Tigers golf team that finished second at the state tournament.

“UK is going to give me the best opportunity in school and golf,” said Stallings Jr. “At UK I can become a better player and get better in the classroom. I feel that they’re going in the right direction as a program and we could do a lot of things for the program. They’re going up and maybe we will win a couple of championships later on if we keep working at it.”

Robert Leasure signed a Letter of Intent to swim at the University of Virginia. The senior has been a member of a Tigers swim team that captured three state championships in his first three years and 24 consecutive titles heading into this season.

“As of right now they (UVA) have won five ACC championships in a row,” said Leasure. “Hopefully when I’m there, that can be something we can continue. A goal personally for me is to make it to the NCAA’s. Then, hopefully, I’ll score at the NCAA’s so I can help Virginia.”

Alabama picked up a tennis commitment from Sean Donohue. Donohue helped the Tigers nab their 21st state championship last year and was named to the all-state team.

Lacrosse standout Zayne Smith will continue his career at the University of Tampa. Smith and the Tigers have won a state title each of the last three years.

Sam Melchior signed a letter of intent to continue his baseball career at Western Kentucky University. Tigers talented shortstop Nate Stemle signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Kentucky Wesleyan.
