Notre Dame Academy 39 St. Aloysius PWV Valley 37

The Notre Dame Academy Saints defeated the St. Aloysius Eagles 39-37 Sunday afternoon at St. Agnes Gymnasium.

“It was not the prettiest game,” said Notre Dame head coach Aaron Troutman. “We were fortunate to come away with the victory at the end. We have a long way to go. We have a bunch of talent. But the effort is there and we have to get better every day.”

Alec Brothers scored seven of the Saints first nine points as Notre Dame jumped out to a 9-3 lead towards the end of the first quarter.

St. Aloysius (0-2) changed the flow of the game with their outside shooting and went on a 14-2 run as the Eagles led Notre Dame 17-11 midway through the second quarter. Both Stephen Mitchell and Spencer Quessenberry nailed threes on the Eagles run. Notre Dame (1-1) retook the lead and led 19-18 at the half.

In the second half both teams frequently traded baskets. Notre Dame pushed the lead out to five by the time the third period ended.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Saints extended their lead to 34-27. St. Aloysius would fight back. Quessenberry scored five of the Eagles next seven points as St. Aloysius reclaimed the lead when Quessenberry sunk a three-pointer to make it 34-33. Brothers of Notre Dame answered with a three pointer on the following possession.

With 10.5 seconds left to play, Stephen Mitchell of St. Aloysius stole the ball from Notre Dame and drove to the basket for an easy layup but it rolled around the rim and fell out as the Saints took home a thrilling 39-37 victory.

Notre dame finished with 13 turnovers while St. Aloysius committed 18 turnovers. The Eagles won the rebounding battle 20-18. Brothers led all players with 18 points while Quessenberry led St. Aloysius with 12 points.

Our Lady of Lourdes 43 St. Agnes 40

The Our Lady of Lourdes Bobcats came back from a ten point halftime deficit to defeat the host St. Agnes Aggies 43-40 Sunday afternoon.

“At halftime, I told them that we had to believe that we could come back and win,” said Our Lady of Lourdes head coach Mike Yates. “Our goal is to hold teams to less than 25 points if possible. I told them it would start with our defense because we had to get stops. We came out and did that in the second half.”

Our Lady of Lourdes (3-0) jumped out to a 5-0 lead early in the game and then St. Agnes (2-1) took control with their outside shooting. By the end of the first quarter St. Agnes hit two three pointers to snag a 13-12 lead.

In the second quarter, Lourdes star player Noah Hoffman picked up his third foul and had to leave the game. Without having to guard Hoffman, St. Agnes extended its lead to ten, taking a 26-16 advantage into the break.

The second half proved to be a different ball game. Hoffman sat out the beginning of the third quarter as St. Agnes still led 29-22. Hoffman entered shortly thereafter and drilled a three pointer on his first play back. The Bobcats ended the third quarter with a 14-2 run. Hoffman scored ten third quarter points and swished a three pointer as time expired to give Lourdes a 36-31 lead going into the final quarter.

But, St. Agnes still had life in them. The Aggies started the third quarter with an 8-0 run to give them a 39-36 lead. Then, Lourdes stepped up on defense and outscored St. Agnes 7-1 the rest of the way to give them a 43-40 win.

Our Lady of Lourdes outrebounded St. Agnes 19-17. St. Agnes committed eight turnovers while Lourdes committed six. Hoffman led all players with 16 points. Sam Hedges led St. Agnes with 12 points and the Aggies Jack Koch finished with 11 points.
