South Oldham defeats Toppers 64-53 in regular season finale

The Presentation Academy Toppers dropped its final regular season game on Friday night, losing to visiting South Oldham High School 64-53.

A heartbreaking loss on Pres Senior Night, the Toppers led throughout most of the game but fell victim to a 4th quarter comeback by the Dragons.

Presentation was the first on the scoreboard, taking the early 2-0 advantage off a quick score from senior Shelby Adams. It was the first two points of her team-high 23-point performance for the night.

A hard-fought contest from the onset, both teams kept within striking distance the entire game. Although Presentation would go up by as many as 7 in the first quarter with a score of 16-9, South Oldham was able to tie the game up before going into the second period after finishing the quarter on a 7-0 run.

Presentation opened things up in the second on a 6-3 run off of baskets by fellow Senior Bailey Reeder, Adams and Peyton Andres, taking the 22-19 lead with just over 4 minutes to go in the half. South Oldham took the lead after back-to-back baskets with a score of 24-22. However, it was senior superstar Adams who single-handedly willed her team back into the lead.

With just under three minutes to go in the half, Adams herself scored the next 8 points, while South Oldham only tacked on 2. Aliyah Johnson scored on the next possession, to give Presentation the 33-26 lead with 40 seconds left to go in the 2nd period. The Dragons were able to hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but the Toppers still went into halftime with the 33-29 advantage.

Taking over three and a half minutes to get any scoring in the 3rd quarter, the second half started out sluggish on the offensive side. South Oldham finally scored with 4:23 left to go in the 3rd, going on a 6-0 run. But once again, Shelby Adams was there to save the day.

Scoring the next six points again, Adams put her team back in the lead at 39-37 with a minute and a half to go in the 3rd. After a South Oldham bucket, Reeder nailed a 3-pointer, extending Presentation’s lead to 42-39.

But, it would be the 4th quarter that would signal the undoing of Presentation.

Clouding Pres' senior night, South Oldham went on a 25-point scoring barrage in the final period that left the home team with few answers. Pres was only able to get 11 points in the final quarter, as the Dragons seemed to be flawless both from the line and on the court. In the end, Presentation came up just short on their senior night, falling 64-53.

Celebrating his 25th season of coaching the Toppers, Presentation head coach David Jackson was pleased with his team’s performance.

“I thought we played extremely well for most of the game,” Jackson said. “We had a couple of spots where we couldn’t handle the basketball. We had a shot to take the lead there in the 4th, but it rimmed out and I thought that was the turning point of the game where they came down and hit a 3 on us. They outscored us in the last half of the last period, but the main thing is that South Oldham got to the glass a lot harder and a lot more often than we did.”

Presentation’s next game is against St. Francis in the quarterfinals of the 25th District Tournament at Manual High School. That game will be played on Monday (Feb. 20) at 7:30pm.
