As the big race approaches, most runners have increased their mileage significantly and thus felt the wear and tear on their body. One common running injury is shin splints, which can occur with an increase in running or other athletic activity, a change in surface, or even just a change in shoe wear.

Symptoms

  • Pain or dull ache in the front of the lower leg- most commonly along the inside of the leg, or tibia
  • Pain which may decrease after warming up but increase as activity continues

Causes

  • Irritated or swollen muscles due to overuse
  • Stress fracture or stress reaction in the bone
  • Rarely these symptoms can be due to compartment syndrome, which will be detailed in an article to come

Risk Factors

  • Structural problems in the foot and ankle (such as flat feet) leading to irritation of tendons
  • Excessively tight calf muscles
  • High impact exercise on hard surfaces

Treatment

  • Rest: as hard as it may be to stop running this far into your training you may be preventing a fracture by resting
  • Ice
  • Anti-inflammatory therapy
  • Stretching and strengthening the foot and ankle musculature
  • Supportive shoes with adequate shock absorption
  • Physical therapy for modalities and proper education
