Twelve Assumption Seniors Sign College LOI

Successful group of Rocket student-athletes make it official

An immensely decorated group of Assumption High School student-athletes signed respective National Letters of Intent to play college sports on Thursday.

A total of 12 Rockets, spanning five different sports, made their decisions official during a group signing ceremony on the AHS campus.

Among the Assumption senior student-athletes who participated were Chelsea Bowles, Morgan Foley, Phoenix Fowler, Katie George, Logan Higgins, Spencer Kurtzahn, Elizabeth Lohr, Taylor Long, Caroline McCaslin, Olivia Reibel, Melanie Strothman, and Dallas Zimmerman.

Bowles, a captain and four-year libero, will sign with the University of Tennessee Martin to play volleyball. In her senior year, Bowles was named to the All Tournament team in the Durango Classic, KHSAA All Tournament Team, Louisville Catholic Sports First Team, KHSAA State Honorable Mention team, and Asics Challenge ESPN top 10 player. She is from St. Athanasius and is the daughter of Ollie Jones and Davy Bowles. 

Foley, a captain and four year basketball and softball player, will sign with University of Indianapolis to play softball. Foley is a pitcher and center fielder for the softball team. In 2011, she was named to the All District team, All Region team, First Team All Region, Seventh Region Junior All Star team, East/West All Star team, All State Honorable Mention, Academic All State, LouisvilleCatholicSports.com All Catholic First Team, and VYPE Athlete of the Month. Already this season she has received Outstanding Individual Performance in the 17th Annual Florida Beach Bash Tournament. She is from St. Bernard and is the daughter of Jennifer and Rick Foley. 

Fowler, four-year libero, will sign with Bellarmine University to play volleyball. Fowler won the KHSAA Sportsmanship Award in 2012 and the Assumption Sportsmanship Award in 2011. She is from De Paul and is the daughter of Fonda and David Fowler. 

George, a captain and four-year setter, outside hitter, passer, and middle blocker, will sign with University of Louisville to play volleyball. A few of the awards George received her senior year include PrepVolleyball National Player of the Year, PrepVolleyball All American, PrepVolleyball Academic All American, ESPNHS Kentucky Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year, KVCA Miss Kentucky Volleyball, KHSCA Outstanding Senior, KHSAA State Tournament MVP, and KVCA Region Seven Player of the Year. She is from Holy Spirit and is the daughter of Ann and Tim George.

Higgins will sign with University of Tennessee Chattanooga to play soccer. For four years, Higgins played outside defense and outside midfield for the Rockets. She was named to the All Tournament team. She is from St. Raphael and is the daughter of Kim and Matt Higgins. 

Kurtzahn, a captain and four-year lacrosse player, will sign with Otterbein University. Kurtzahn played attack freshman year and defense the remaining three years for the Rockets. She was named to the Louisville Elite travel team 2009-2012. She is from Oldham County and is the daughter of Lesley and Mark Kurtzahn.     

Lohr, a captain and four-year track, cross country, and field hockey player, will sign with Centre College to run cross country and track. Lohr was part of the State Championship cross country team and Regional Championship track team. She is from St. Agnes and is the daughter of Annie and David Lohr.  

Long, a four-year outside hitter, will sign with Jacksonville State to play volleyball. In her senior year, Long was named to the District and Regional All Tournament Team. She is from St. Edward and is the daughter of Julie and Jason Long.  

McCaslin, a captain and four-year runner, will sign with Elon University to run cross country and track. McCaslin lead the cross country team to a State Championship in 2010 and 2011 and a track State Championship in 2011. She also set a school record at the New Balance Indoor Track National Championship in the Championship Division in the 4x1 mile relay. She is from North Oldham Middle School and is the daughter of Margaret and Glenn McCaslin. 

Reibel, a four-year cross country and track and field runner, will sign with Bellarmine University to run track and field. Reibel was part of the cross country State Championship team in 2010 and 2011 and track State Championship team in 2011. She is from St. Edward and is the daughter of Melody and Michael Reibel.  

Strothman will sign with Bellarmine University to run cross country and track. Strothman was part of the cross country State Championship team in 2010 and 2011 and track State Championship in 2011. She is from St. Albert and is the daughter of Jeannie and Greg Strothman. 

Zimmerman, a four-year middle blocker, will sign with University of Tennessee Martin to play volleyball. In her senior year, Zimmerman was named to the All District team, All State Tournament team, and Second Team All State. She is from Johnson and JCTMS middle schools and is the daughter of Teresa and Blaine Durbin.
