Rockets set records, earn state title in Class 3-A

LouisvilleCatholicSports.com chronicles the 2011-2012 sports year in review. We will bring you every sport, every season, every team’s results in a capsule each weekday until we're finished. From Cross-Country to Softball and all sports in between, here’s what happened in 2011-2012 on the Louisville Catholic sports scene.

Assumption ran away with top honors at the Class 3-A state Track & Field meet on the efforts of their outstanding middle-distance and distance runners. In addition to winning the state Cross Country championship and the state Volleyball championship, the Rockets earned their third team state title of the year with superior performances in the running events.

Sacred Heart Academy finished in 7th place in the same competition. The Holy Cross Cougars also earned a 7th place finish in the Class 1-A state meet. With so many underclassmen dotting the rosters of these squads, the coming years should be exciting to see them battling it out on the track.

Here’s our look back at the 2012 Girls Track & Field season.

Assumption – Kentucky Class 3-A State Champions

Assumption high school played to their strengths in the state meet taking home 4 first place finishes (3,200 meter relay, and individual championships in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs) and three fourth place finishes in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs. These first and fourth place finishes accounted for 55 of their team’s 63.5 points.

The Rockets started the state championship meet by crushing the field with a record setting performance in the 3,200 meter relay (4 x 800). Sophomore Katherine Receveur joined with seniors Amanda Vokun, Melanie Strothman and Caroline McCaslin to run the relay in 9:17, 22 seconds ahead of runners up Oldham County. The record setting performance set the stage for other outstanding performances from the talent Rockets runners.

Receveur, who was named the Girls Class 3A Athlete of the Year, also won the 800 meter race while fellow sophomores Bailey Davis (1,600 meters) and Emily Bean (3,200 meters) won their races as well. Receveur won the 800 by more than 4 seconds, while Davis held off Male’s Cassidy Hale down the stretch to win by 1.7 seconds. Bean then nipped Hale at the wire in the 3,200 to win by a scant 0.07.

McCaslin took 4th in the 1,600 meters and Strothman took home 4th place in the 800 meters. Sophomore Kenzley Defler raced to a 4th place finish in the 3,200. Assumption’s 4x400 meter relay team of Vokun, Strothman, Receveur and junior Hannah Elliott finished in 6th place.

Holy Cross – Kentucky state meet Class 1-A: 7th place

The Holy Cross Cougars had a strong showing at the Class 1-A state track meet. Seniors Maya Hardin and Julie Skaggs led the way for a 7th place finish in the team standings.

Hardin won the individual title in the discus throw with a distance of 111 feet, 4 inches. She also finished runner-up in the girls' shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 7 inches.

Skaggs competed in three field events for the Cougars, but did not factor into the long jump points because of a disqualifying foul. She did manage to finish 4th in the high jump (5 feet) and 14th in the triple jump (32-05.25).

On the track, Holy Cross freshman Madison Riley finished 9th in the 300 meter hurdles, while Karly Gawarecki finished 8th in the girls' 3,200. The Lady Cougars' top-finishing relay team was in the 4x800 relay, in which the foursome of Gawarecki, Christa Brutscher, Jenna Johnston and Ashby Eggers finished 5th overall with a time of 10:13.88.

Sacred Heart Academy – Kentucky state meet Class 3-A: 7th place

The 2011 state champions lost a valuable member of their distance running squad in All-American Emma Brink, but the Valkyries enjoyed several solid performances at the state meet in 2012 and were able to score 35 total points, good enough for 7th place in the state.

In the field events, Senior Jazmin Smith won the high jump with a clean leap at the 5’4” mark to net 10 points for the Valkyries. Sophomore Daijai Ruffin had a shot put throw of 36’1.25” to earn 5th place and 4 points for the team.

The SHA 4x400 relay team of underclassmen sophomores Summer Stevens and Parker Shay along with freshman Tiana Smith and junior Kristin Matula finished 8th and freshman Maggie Allen earned 8th place in the 800 meter run.

Matula took home fourth place in the 300 meter hurdles, just 0.51 seconds from a second place finish.

In the 1,600 meter run, freshmen Maggie Allen (3rd place) and Samantha Simms (5th place) racked up 10 total points in that event for the Valkyries.

The Valkyries 3,200 meter relay team of Shay, Simms, Allen and sophomore Betsy Daly earned fifth place.
