Kristin Matula did big things for the Sacred Heart field hockey team, including leading the Valkyries to the state title as a senior.

Now the 2012 Miss Kentucky Field Hockey is doing big things as a freshman at Michigan State.

Playing in her first-ever NCAA Tournament, Matula scored the game winning goal in the 52nd minute Saturday to help Michigan State stun No. 2-seed Syracuse in the first round.

Michigan State snapped Syracuse’s 45-game home winning streak and advanced to the Elite Eight. Michigan State defeated Miami (Ohio) 3-0 in a play-in game to earn the right to face the Orange.

It was only Matula’s second goal of the season. Her other goal came in a 7-0 victory over Pacific on Sept. 1.

Despite Matula’s big goal Saturday, the Spartans weren’t able to continue their streak as they fell to Connecticut 3-1 in the second round.

While the season may have come to an unfortunate close, this was the first time since 2009 that Michigan State’s field hockey team won a game in the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans ended the season with 14-10 record, 4-2 in the Big Ten Conference.

Matula played in 22 of the Spartans' 24 games, including two starts, and had two goals and had five shots on goal.
