Knights look to keep offense rolling vs. Mercer...

The Bellarmine University lacrosse team will be looking to capture its third straight win in a nonconference clash with visiting Mercer on Saturday. With a win the Knights would tie their best seven-game start to a season since 2008 (6-1).

Mercer (3-3) comes into Saturday's matchup fresh off of Tuesday's 14-11 loss to Marquette. The Bears have fallen to Duke and Towson as well, while beating Rollins, Saint Joseph's and Wagner College.

Mercer's offense is led by freshman Chris Baxa, who is averaging an impressive four points per game and leading the Bears in scoring (18g 6a). Mercer's offense is also paced by junior attackman Zack Ward, who has accumulated 17 points (15g 2a).

The Bears will also benefit at the faceoff “x” with specialist Justin Evans. The sophomore is winning 60.5 percent of his faceoff attempts, the 11th-best winning percentage in the nation. Evans is also leading the Bears in groundballs, scooping up 41.

The Bears are a young team with just two seniors but certainly have the talent and coaching to upset the Knights. Bellarmine assistant coach Jim Mitchell is all too familiar with Mercer head coach Kyle Hannan's pedigree. Mitchell served as the defensive coordinator at Goucher College for two years under Hannan.

Bellarmine will look to seniors Michael Ward (9g 6a) and Lance Robinson (9g 6a), along with junior Cameron Gardner, to keep the its offense rolling. Gardner is leading Bellarmine in scoring with 20 points (18g 2a) and is tied for seventh in the nation with an average of three goals per game.

Senior Karsen Leung has also been a revelation for the Knights after sitting out almost all of 2012 with an injury. In addition to his three goals, Leung has dished out 14 assists, putting him into a tie for 11th in the country with an average of 2.33 per game. Leung's 36 career assists also moves him into fifth place on the career assists list at Bellarmine.

Faceoff will be on at 1 p.m. Saturday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
