FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Bellarmine University lacrosse team edged Fairfield 8-7 on Saturday at Alumni Field in Fairfield. The Knights used a four-goal first quarter to gain momentum and capture their third Eastern College Athletic Conference win of the season.

Bellarmine got its first quarter tallies from Chad Mitchell, Karsen Leung, Michael Ward and Cameron Gardner. Fairfield's Jordan Greenfield was able to net a goal for the Stags in the first quarter on an extra-man opportunity to close the first quarter at 4-1.

Fairfield closed the gap to 4-2 after striking first in the second quarter on an unassisted goal from Drew Federico. Bellarmine responded with back-to-back goals from Leung and senior Lance Robinson.

With 48 seconds to play in the half Fairfield tallied another goal to cut the halftime deficit to 6-3.

After Robinson started the second half scoring with his second tally of the afternoon, Fairfield's Tristan Sperry answered with back-to-back goals to trim the margin to 7-5.

Brogan Hill's unassisted goal with almost 10 minutes to play ended up being the game-winner for the Knights.

The last 6:17 of the game would not be comfortable for Bellarmine as Fairfield's Sperry completed his hat-trick and put the Stags within one goal. The Knights, in part thanks to Dillon Ward's five fourth-quarter saves, held on for the victory.

The Knights had good games offensively from Robinson, who tallied two goals on just three shots, and Leung, who moved away from his regular distributor role and scored two goals as well.

Ward played well again, stopping 17 shots on the day. Sophomore LSM Bobby Schmitt also contributed in the Knights' victory, handing out two assists, scooping up four groundballs and causing three turnovers.

Bellarmine now moves to 7-2 (3-2 ECAC) on the season and will look to win consecutive ECAC games when they travel to Denver to take on the Pioneers at noon April 7.
