Assumption High School named Gene Baker as its new athletic director Thursday. Baker previously he served as the athletic director at Ponte Vedra High School since 2007 and was the president and CEO of Shark Sports Camps since 2008.

“We are excited to welcome Gene to the Assumption community,” principal Becky Henle said in a news release. “His experience and his philosophy of the benefits of high school athletics for growth of the whole person will help our very strong athletic program continue to grow.”

Baker has ties to the Louisville as he was the head coach of the University of Louisville baseball team from 1991-95. He also was an athletic director at Davidson Academy in Nashville and Bristol College in Tennessee.

I am honored to have been selected by the Assumption leadership team to grow into the future with AHS athletics,” Baker said in a release “I can't tell you how anxious I am to hear all of the hopes, plans and dreams of our athletes and coaches to apply my experience in facilitating their achievement in a school whose mission is to develop the whole student, with an emphasis on faith, compassion, integrity and excellence. I can’t wait to get started.”

Baker replaces Bobby Blair, who resigned unexpectedly in January to take a job in Dallas. He had been Assumption's athletic director since 2010.
