One goal down, a few more to conquer along the way. That is the way history gets written.

The Bellarmine University men’s lacrosse team earned its first-ever Top-20 ranking, cracking the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media poll at No. 20. This honor comes after a tough 11-10 double-overtime loss at No. 3-ranked Denver.

The Knights  (7-3, 3-3 ECAC) have been among a group of four or five teams “also receiving votes” through the first two months of the season but have finally earned the recognition among the national media as worthy of a Top-20 ranking. Head coach Kevin Burns has mentioned in a few interviews that his team was ready for and has earned that type of recognition. And though the Knights have lost three games, at No. 3 Denver (11-10 2OT), at No. 5 Loyola (8-6) and home against No. 15 Ohio State (9-7), it seems that the voting members in the media are finally taking notice.

The next step for the Knights is to secure their first-ever postseason berth. They can reach the ECAC postseason tournament with a win this Saturday t Owsley B. Frazier Stadium against Hobart, a team that defeated Bellarmine 14-13 last season. If Bellarmine defeats Hobart, the Knights will be guaranteed a spot in the ECAC conference tournament to be played at Hobart on May 2.

The Louisville Catholic Sports Network will broadcast the game over the internet at www.louisvillecatholicsports.com.
