St. Mary Academy defeated the Holy Spirit Falcons 5-1 in the seventh/eighth grade CSAA Coed Soccer City Championship game Saturday at Mary Queen of Peace Field.

“This group is excellent,” St. Mary head coach Paul Kerr said. “Most of them play other sports and don’t play soccer. They’ve a lot of heart, and good school spirit. It was delightful for them to win because a lot of them are eighth graders and will move on and some of them are leaving the city. So it’s good to win it for them.”

Despite the scoreboard saying otherwise, the two teams battled it out for nearly the full 60 minutes. The Monarchs didn’t seal the game until they scored three goals in the final five minutes.

“They’ve a lot of heart,” Coach Kerr said. “They showed a lot of character. They worked hard all the time to overcome the best. That was the most important thing for them to do.”

Jake Taylor scored the game’s first goal five minutes in to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead. Holy Spirit tied it up at one when the Falcons netted a goal from midfield.

After the Falcons first half goal, St. Mary goalkeeper Colin Cagata blanked Holy Spirit the rest of the way with his spectacular defense.

Michael Kerr scored a goal with just four minutes left in the first half to give St. Mary’s a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Most of the second half was a defensive affair until Taylor and Kerr sealed the deal with their second goals of the game with less than five to go.

Coach Kerr then subbed out all of his starters. Collin Browning blasted the game’s final goal as time expired.

“We wanted to play hard, shut down the opposition, and pass the ball,” Coach Kerr said. “We moved the ball quite a bit and that was our strategy. The weather was pretty cool and slick for us but we tried the best we could.”
