Major upsets were the talk of Wimbledon this past week, with Federer, Nadal, Sharapova, and Serena Williams amongst others, exiting early. There was also talk regarding the rash of injuries this year with a total of 7 players withdrawing with a variety of knee and shoulder injuries.

The withdrawals have occurred for a variety of reasons, but some were questioning the playing surface this year. According to officials, the court surfaces have been prepared to the exact same specifications as they have been in years past. The surfaces have been independently checked and have been found to be near identical to previous years.

Although factors such as humidity and temperature affect playing surfaces, and individuals playing gear may affect their game…(just ask Federer about the banning of his orange-soled shoes), this year will no doubt go down as one of those odd happenstance years where bad luck ruled, and the underdogs prevailed!
