LEXINGTON, Ky. — St. Xavier’s bid for a second consecutive state wrestling championship came up short as the Tigers placed fourth Saturday at the Kentucky Horse Park’s Alltech Arena.

St. X finished with 134.5 points to tie Woodford County as Union County won with 203, followed by Campbell County (189.5) and Trinity (140).

Union County seized its seventh team state championship and first since 2011.

First-year Trinity head coach Eddie Rudolph was happy with the Shamrocks’ third-place showing.

“It’s hard to beat Union, but I couldn’t be more pleased with how our kids performed today,” said Rudolph, who is in his second stint at Trinity’s head coach. “They came out, got pressure on them and came all the way back and got third. There’s nothing else I could wish for. They performed and did better than what I thought they would.”

St. X was led by Dominic Lampe (160 pound weight class) and his brother Justin Lampe (152), who both won state titles. Adam Cook (106) advanced to the semifinals but dropped a 14-6 decision to Woodford County’s Tucker Hurst. Cook ended up placing fifth.

Justin Lampe pinned Lafayette’s Jon Green (33-7) to win the state title in the 152 pound class after winning the championship at 145 pounds last year.

“I expected him to fight,” Justin said. “I didn’t expect to dominate like that. That was my goal, though; it’s my goal every time I go out there. It’s nice to go out that way.”

He defeated Scott’s Eli Sowder, Oldham County’s Sam Gnadinger, Hopkinsville’s Robert Bussell, and Ryle’s Jon Belk to get to the title round.

Justin racked up a 100-1 record during his final two seasons at St. X. As a junior he went 51-0, and he continued the dominance his senior season – posting a 49-1 mark.

“I don’t think there was any more pressure,” he said. “I think the main difference is that last year we won as a team. This year Campbell and Union pulled out ahead and we aren’t going to win.”

Dominic earned revenge after finishing as the runner-up at 152 pounds last year.  The junior defeated Simon Kenton’s Casey Cornett (53-7) in the 160 state final with a 10-4 decision.

“Last year I lost to a Simon Kenton kid, and this year I beat a Simon Kenton kid,” Dominic said. “When my brother went out there, he set the pace for me by getting the pin. I knew what I had to do, and he gave me inspiration.”

To get to the final, Dominic defeated South Oldham’s Jean Paul Parragav, Montgomery County’s Colton Miller, Christian County’s Kenneth Sells and North Oldham’s Mitch Rusch. He wrestled right after his brother.

“There was a little pressure,” Dominic said. “But I knew I wanted to do the same thing and not give up. Everybody was on my side, and I knew I could better.”

Lucas Miozza and a sick Tyler Frankrone were Trinity’s two wrestlers who  advanced to the state championship round.

Miozza, completed a 41-6 season with a 3-1 overtime loss to Ryle’s Johnny Meiman (59-8) in the 170 pound class final. The junior defeated John Hardin’s Louis Hollings, Wayne County’s Casey Mink and Campbell County’s Dustin Turner to get to the final.

“I really wanted to wrestle him; I had a great practice round,” Miozza said. “He won it. I got a lot better this year, and I was hoping for the best. It’s dissapointing.”

Meiman was ranked No. 1 all year, with Miozza second.

Frankrone wrapped a 30-3 year with a 12-1 decision over Campbell County’s Elisiah Matthews (40-11) to win the 182 pound class. The sophomore posted victories over North Oldham’s Josh Hill, Newport’s Gage Jones, Fern Creek’s Kohl Dodd and Woodford County’s Wyatt Courtney to get to the championship round.

“I kept thinking about all the hard work I had put in this year,” Frankrone said. “I kept thinking how much it would hurt if I didn’t tough it out. It feels great to win, and now I feel like I can overcome anything and dominate next year.”

Frankrone  became a state champ even though he has been sick the past two weeks and twisted an ankle Saturday  morning.

“I have bronchitis and I have strep throat,” he said. “My ankle is messed up. I pushed through it.”

Keegan Duncan (126) and Benjamin Barton (138) made it to the semifinals but failed to advance.

“Frankrone has been fighting that cold for two weeks,” Rudolph said. “He can’t get rid of it. All of our kids wrestled good. We got three third places and a fifth place. Tyler won. Lucas was runner-up. It’s surreal coming back this year and us finishing third at the state meet. It’s awesome.”

Barton lost a 19-7 decision to Campbell County’s Sean Fausz but defeated Oldham County’s Conner Wilkerson 7-1 to place third.

“I’m very proud of my team,” Frankrone said. “I love everybody on my team. We’ve come so far and have gotten a lot better since the beginning of the season. We’ve been working hard. Nobody thought we could do this.”

Duncan dropped a 6-0 decision to Trae Blackwell of Union County in the semifinals, then beat Christian County’s Caleb Austin 3-1 to finish third.

“Keegan had a pretty tough kid he drew into,” Rudolph said. “After that third-place match I think I’ve never seen him smile that much all year. The kid that he beat beat him last year. He was tickled to death.”
