SHA, Trinity win tennis regional titles

Both the Sacred Heart and Trinity tennis teams advanced to the state tournament by winning Seventh Region titles Wednesday. The two teams advance to Saturday’s state sectionals.

GIRLS’ RESULTS

Sacred Heart won the Seventh Region championship for a third consecutive year. The Valkyries earned 14 points and were followed by second-place Assumption, which had nine.

Christian Academy (8), Ballard (7), Collegiate (7), Mercy (5), Kentucky Country Day (2), Waggener (2), Eastern (2), Seneca (1), Atherton (1) and Jeffersontown (1) followed the Valkyries and Rockets in order.

The Valkyries also had competitors in the singles and doubles final, but lost both. Ellie Gerlach (Christian Academy) defeated Caroline Walter (Sacred Heart) 6-2, 6-1 in the singles championship match.

Alexis Austin/Caroline Cox (Collegiate) defeated Ashley Hammons/Mary Elaine Kuo (Sacred Heart) 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) in the doubles championship match.

BOYS’ RESULTS

Trinity won the Seventh Region championship for a fifth straight year. The Shamrocks earned a total of 13 points.

Ballard (10), Atherton (8), Christian Academy (7), Kentucky Country Day (6), Eastern (4), Whitefield Academy (4) and Jeffersontown (2) followed.

The Shamrocks will also send a doubles team to the state tournament as they were guaranteed the title. Mustafa Gardezi/Wes Tolsdorf defeated teammates Tommy McConville/Austin Strause 6-3, 6-2.
