St. Xavier star wrestler Dominic Lampe was suspended from postseason competition Thursday by head coach Jim Kraeszig and athletic director Alan Donhoff for a violation of team rules.

In an email to LCSN Thursday, Kraeszig said that Lampe was off limits to media after the infraction.

The Courier Journal’s Jason Frakes reported that Jeff Lampe (Dominic’s father) said his son’s backpack and locker were searched by St. X officials after Dominic and two other students set off a firecracker in the locker room. The officials found chewing tobacco in Dominic's possession.

According to the C-J, any St. X athlete who gets a first tobacco offense gets an automatic suspension of 10 percent of a season, whether it’s the postseason or regular season.

Dominic will miss this weekend’s regional tournament and next week’s state tournament. Lampe was rated as the top 170-pound wrestler this year by KentuckyWrestling.com and won the 160-pound weight class last year.

John and Justin Lampe, Dominic’s older brothers, have also won state titles. John won championships in 2010 and 2011, while Justin won titles in 2013 and 2014. Dominic will join his two older brothers at UT-Chattanooga next year.
