Knights fall to Richmond in home finale
After jumping out to an early lead, the Bellarmine Knights lacrosse team certainly looked poised to pull the Senior Day upset over league leader Richmond this afternoon as they took a 6-4 lead into halftime in the Southern Conference contest at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium. However, the second half was all Spiders as Richmond shut out the Knights while scoring seven times to post the 11-6 victory.
Bellarmine Coach Kevin Burns couldn't have scripted a better opening for his squad as Connor Harryman won the opening face-off then got the ball to Colin Hart for a goal just 19 seconds into the game. The Spiders responded with two straight to take their first lead of the game at 2-1 less than midway through the first quarter.
The Knights answered as Andrew Schoeneck created his own shot and beat Richmond goalie Benny Pugh for the tying goal with 8:07 remaining in the opening period.
After a scoreless drought of nearly seven and a half minutes, the Knights and Spiders each notched a goal in the final minute of the first quarter to end the first 15 minutes tied 3-3.
Goals by Bellarmine's Austin Shanks and Schoeneck gave the Knights a 5-3 lead at the midpoint of the second quarter. The Spiders' J.P. Forester scored the first of his two goals to bring Richmond within one, but Bellarmine's Brogan Hill ended the first half's scoring with an unassisted goal at the 1:25 mark.
The halftime stats showed the story of a close game with BU holding a 15-14 edge in shots and a 10-9 advantage in ground balls. Both goalies had six saves in the opening period, and each team had six face-off wins.
Once the second half began, however, those statistics shifted drastically in favor of the Spiders. Richmond outshot the Knights 27-8 in the second half and won the ground ball battle 23-9, thanks in large part to an 8-1 advantage in face-offs.
Richmond took its first lead since early in the first quarter at the 5:53 mark of the third quarter, and the Knights simply were unable to mount a rally. The Spiders tacked on four more goals as the lead swelled to 11-6 with 9:28 remaining in the game.
The Knights were led by Shanks and Schoeneck with two goals apiece. Shanks extended his consecutive games with a goal streak to 23, which is the third longest in the country. Richmond's offensive leader was Forester, who finished with two goals and two assists.
Drew Goethals picked up 16 saves on the day for Bellarmine while Pugh made eight for the Spiders.
Richmond remains unbeaten in SoCon play and improves to 9-4, 5-0 SoCon with the win while Bellarmine slips to 4-7, 2-3 SoCon.
The Knights are now in a must-win situation to make the Southern Conference Tournament. Bellarmine travels to High Point next week in their regular season finale on Saturday. The Panthers are currently 3-2 in the conference standings. The Knights are tied with Furman for fourth place in the SoCon, but the Paladins own the head-to-head victory over BU.
Prior to today's game, Bellarmine honored 12 senior members of the lacrosse team playing in their final game at Frazier Stadium. The honorees included: Grant Beczkalo, Nate Blue, Bradley Davis, Jay Desnoyers, Dylan Gatt, Colin Hart, Brogan Hill, Hayden Miller, Bobby Schmitt, Ryan Scinta, Reid Wesley and Daniel Zamora.
