The Bellarmine University men's soccer team opened its three-game exhibition slate Monday with a 2-1 loss to Division I University of Evansville at Arad McCutchan Stadium.

Sophomore forward Luke Mocherman scored Bellarmine's goal off a feed from junior midfielder Beau Laufer in the 48th minute to tie the game at 1, but Ian McGrath put away the decisive goal for the Aces in the 66th minute.

Nate Opperman got the scoring started for Evansville when he recovered a loose ball in the 34th minute and sank a shot from 12 yards out. Mocherman put away the equalizer off a cross from Laufer before McGrath converted a deflection off a corner kick into a goal for the winner.

Neither defense allowed much. Evansville took 11 shots to the eight of Bellarmine. The Aces had a slight edge — 5-4 — in shots on goal. Sophomore midfielder Callum Southern led the Knights with three shots.

The teams played three 30-minute periods, with junior goalkeeper Tommy Hebert playing the entirety for Bellarmine and corralling three saves. Evansville played a different goalie each period.

Bellarmine's freshmen had orientation responsibilities on campus and did not make the trip. There were 18 different players that logged minutes for the Knights, with the vast majority racking up 40 or more.

Bellarmine plays its second exhibition at 7 p.m. (ET) on Sunday at Georgetown College.
