The DeSales Colts hosted class 6-A North Hardin Friday night and shut down the Trojans 41-14. The Colts defense was solid throughout, limiting the sharp North Hardin passing attack to just 15 yards until the very last drive of the game.

“We just played very well in all three phases: offense, defense and special teams,” DeSales head coach Harold Davis said. “Offense came out strong and scored right away. I think that group really improved tonight.”

Austin Tharp led the attack with two rushing touchdowns and a receiving score. Sophomore running back Carlos Ordway led the running game with 107 yards on 15 carries.

Senior quarterback Brayden Rechtenwald got the start and completed 7 of 12 passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns, one to Tharp and one to Dustin Hollenkamp.

“The thing that stood out to me was holding that North Hardin (5-2) passing game to just 15 yards until that last drive,” Davis said. “They passed for 55 yards on their last drive, but our defense played really well.”

The Colts snagged two interceptions and allowed one touchdown through the air, but limited the Trojans to completing just 9 of 24 attempts for 70 yards.

DeSales now prepares for Class 2-A cross-town rival Christian Academy. The teams play for the Brothers In Faith Trophy. In the past five years this game has become one of the finest, toughest rivalry battles in the state.

“For me, it’s become a really good rivalry with us being district opponents,” Davis said. “It’s meant so much to both teams. You know you’re going to get an opponent that is very disciplined, very sound in everything they do. We have to be focused on what we do and put in the work because they’re a very tough team. They have a lot of talent and we know we’re going to get their best shot.”
