INDIANAPOLIS — The first-ever Bellarmine University wrestling team is picked to finish seventh in the inaugural Great Lakes Valley Conference wrestling season.

The new league consists of seven teams. In a vote by the GLVC's coaches, Maryville is predicted to top the league after receiving five first-place votes and 31 points. The Saints edged McKendree, which totaled 30 points and one top vote.

Wisconsin-Parkside followed in third (one top vote, 26 points) and then came Indianapolis (25), Drury (14), Truman State (12) and Bellarmine (nine).

Wrestling is the 21st-sponsored sport by the GLVC, and the league is anticipated to be formidable. Four teams were nationally ranked in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Preseason Poll. Maryville is ranked second in the poll, Indianapolis and McKendree are tied for eighth, and Wisconsin-Parkside is tied for 19th. The GLVC was the only league to boast three teams in the top 10 while tying for the second-largest contingent overall behind the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's five.

At the 2016 NCAA Division II Championships, Maryville paced current GLVC members with a fifth-place finish followed by Wisconsin-Parkside and McKendree in seventh and eighth, respectively, while Indianapolis placed 13th.

Bellarmine opens the season Saturday at the University of the Cumberlands' Patriot Open in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
