St. Martha nudges past SMM

St. Martha’s seventh/eighth grade football team defeated visiting St. Margaret Mary 20-16 in the season opener for both teams.

The Mustangs scored the game first points when Brian Hart’s rushing touchdown put St. Martha in a 6-0 hole with 3:17 left in the opening quarter.

Lawson’s touchdown for St. Martha tied the game at six with 1:57 left in the opening quarter. Justin Walsh’s PAT kick gave the Rocks an 8-6 edge.

The Mustangs Jack Ayre’s 64-yard kickoff return touchdown and Hart made the PAT kick to put the Rocks back in a 14-8 hole after as the first quarter clock expired.

Lawson’s touchdown allowed St. Martha to tie the game up at 14 with 6:07 remaining in the second quarter.

Lawson’s third rushing touchdown of the game in the third quarter gave the Mustangs a 20-14 victory. He also grabbed an interception in the fourth quarter that sealed the game.
