Bishop David (now Holy Cross) alum Paul Nauert is umpiring his first World Series as the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers fight for the title.

Nauert graduated from Bishop David in 1981 and has worked the 2004 American League Division Series, the 2008 National League Division Series, the 2010 National League Division Series, the 2013 National League Division Series, the 2014 American League Division Series, the 2016 National League Championship Series, and the 2017 National League Division Series but never the World Series.

Nauert also umpired the MLB China Series in 2008; the first MLB games ever played in China, and the 2008 Japan Opening Series.

The Louisville native worked first base for game one which the LA Dodgers won and then he worked behind home plate Tuesday night in which the Astros made a heroic comeback and won in 11 innings.

The umpire started his Major League Baseball career in 1991.

“And to think you got your start as my assistant coach on a third and fourth grade baseball team,” Chris Carey said on the Holy Cross Facebook page. “You have come a long way grasshopper. So proud of you. Good luck and congrats.”

Nauert has received a lot of congratulations from the Dixie Highway community as umpiring a World Series is a dream that’s unreachable for many.

“Love stories about Louisville area guys and girls making it big on the national scene via sports, military, church, business, other venues,” Kevin Masterson said on the Holy Cross Facebook page. “Not Hollywood.”

Nauert grew up in the Dixie Highway area and attended St. Lawrence.
