Tigers and Valkyries advance to state semis

The Sacred Heart and St. Xavier soccer teams won quarterfinal games Saturday night at Lexington’s Frederick Douglass High.


St. Xavier 6, Oldham County 1

The Tigers cruised past the Colonels to secure a spot in the state semifinals and will face Warren Central at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lexington Lafayette.

John Schrepferman scored two goals and dished out two assists and Conner George scored two goals to lead the Tigers.

Case Cox and Bennett Moorman also each scored a goal and dished out two assists.

Jeff Thomas scored the lone Oldham County goal.

Oldham County only took three shots the entire game while St. X fired 17 shots at Oldham County goalkeeper Thomas Heufner who saved three shots.


Sacred Heart 1, Simon Kenton (Overtime)

Caraline Franke scored the golden goal just two minutes into overtime to help the Valkyries advance to Thursday’s 8 p.m. semifinal game against defending state champ West Jessamine at Lexington Lafayette.

“Cara received the ball on the left side of the field from Anna Buse,” Sacred Heart head coach Jaclyn Puntillo said via text message. “She feinted left, touched the ball to the middle to create space and then struck the ball with her right foot, beating the keep in the upper left corner.”

Sacred Heart fired 14 shots at Simon Kenton goalkeeper Skylin Yates who made seven saves.

The Pioneers blasted four shots at Sacred Heart goalkeeper Eliza Kelly who made two saves.
