The Louisville Catholic Sports Network has chosen its top 10 stories of 2017 and is posting them in a series that started Dec. 19 with an honorable mention list. LCSN will have a story each day with the exception of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. We will run our top story of the year Dec. 31st.

Sacred Heart’s golf team winning their second straight state title and sixth in seven years is the No. 8 story of 2017.

The Valkyries shot a 41-over-par 617 at Bowling Green County Club in October to win their 11th state championship in program history. Scott County shot a 653 to come in second place.

Not only, did the team win the state title, but Ryan Bender captured the individual state title shooting a two-day 148.

Bender is the first Valkyrie to win an individual state title since Lindsay Gahm won it in 2009 and joins Heather Kraus (1993 individual state champ) as the only other three from the school to win an individual state golf championship.

It was a dominant day as Taylor Edlin shined and tied with Elizabethtown’s Sarah Hinton for second place.

Erin Rowland (20th, 160), Cameron Martin (T-27th, 163), and Jacqueline Steier (T-49th, 171) also shot for Sacred Heart.

The state championship wrapped up a banner for the Valkyries as they shot a 316 to win the Region Five Tournament at Shelbyville Country Club just the week before.

Martin (78), Edlin (79), Bender (80), Rowland (82), and Steier (84) guided Sacred Heart to the regional victory.
