Tigers make college choices official

A total of 12 St. Xavier student-athletes made their college choices at a ceremony at the school Wednesday afternoon.

In lacrosse, Nicholas Malubay signed with Centre College. Nic, a two-sport varsity letterman, is the team’s second leading scorer this season with 25 goals and 11 assists. Jake Zickel will play for the University of Indianapolis. Jake is a two-year starter for the Tigers. With one regular season game remaining on the schedule, Jake has 17 goals along with 11 assists.

Owen Johnson, the Tigers third leading scorer in the 2017 football campaign, will play for Elon University. Owen kicked eight field goals and 41 extra points, which earned him 2nd team All-Metro Area Kicker honors from the Courier-Journal earlier this year.

Sam Wilson will play baseball for Earlham College. Sam has been a stalwart on the mound for the past two years. In 2016, he had a 1.46 ERA in 24 innings and so far in 2017, he has a 1.24 ERA in 22.2 innings while striking out 25 opposing batters. Chris Esselman signed with Centre College. Chris hit .364 in the 2016 KHSAA state tournament and is currently batting .386 with 21 RBI and has earned two victories on the mound. Both Chris and Sam were members of the 2016 KHSAA state championship baseball team.

Ian Waldrop, a two-year member of the Tiger soccer program, will play for Hanover College. During his career, he scored five goals and helped lead the Tigers to 34 wins. His five assists as a senior made him the team’s 2nd leading facilitator for Tiger goals. Brad Middleton will play for Bellarmine University. A two-year member, Brad scored 12 goals adding 4 assists to help lead the Tigers to 34 wins. He led the team in scoring with eight goals while adding four assists in 2017.

In wrestling, Joshua Schmidt signed with Lindsey Wilson College. A four-year varsity starter, Joshua was the Region 4 Champion in the 113-pound weight class this year and earned victories in the first two rounds of the KHSAA State Wrestling Tournament. Additionally, Joshua was a two-year starter and State Champion Powerlifter.

Spencer Blandford, a member of the 2014, 2015 and 2016 KHSAA state championship tennis teams, will play for the University of Southern Indiana. Spencer was a state semifinalist in doubles in 2016 and carries an 11-2 record in singles and 13-0 record in doubles this year.

In track and cross country, Ryan Guenthner will run for the University of Cincinnati. Ryan was the top senior for St. X, finishing 4th overall at the KHSAA state championship in November. Andrew Edwards, a two-sport athlete in track and cross country, will run for Centre College. Andrew finished 8th at the state championship. Both student-athletes were members of the 2015 and 2016 KHSAA state championship cross country team.

Martin Nitzken will swim for Miami University (Ohio). Martin was a four-year letterman for the Tiger Swimming and Diving team. For the second consecutive year, he along with his teammates, broke the Kentucky state record in the 200-yard medley relay at the KHSAA state meet. Martin has earned both All-State and All-American recognition.
