Anything can happen in high school sports when the postseason arrives, nobody is safe, and Trinity’s top-ranked soccer team found that out  the hard way.

Ballard stunned the host Shamrocks 3-2 (4-3) in PKs Tuesday night to advance to the Seventh Region semifinals.

Trinity had been undefeated going into the game was ranked in the top-five nationally by several rankings.

Brandon McManus put the Rocks up 1-0 with 26 minutes to go in the first-half when he scored off a Nolan Durbin assist.

The Bruins got the equalizer when Joey Gladys’ header off a corner kick inched past keeper Will Leonard’s reach with 32:26 to go in the game.

However that changed 20 minutes later.

Reed Shay’s emphatic strike put the Rocks ahead 2-1 with 13:55 left.

Simon Fewell played a through-ball that rolled past a mixture of players to Shay, who one-touched it into the back of the net from the top of the box.

Ballard fought back and tied the game when Nicholas Rolink’s rebound close-range goal with 1:17 left to go forced the contest into overtime.

Neither team was able to score in the two 5-minute overtime periods, setting up a PK shootout.

After the regular 5 penalty rounds, the two teams had both scored three, resulting in sudden-death. Ballard’s Nati Hamilton netted the go-ahead penalty while keeper Tyler Voyer made the game-winning save.
