Valkyries advance to title game

Sacred Heart’s soccer team is headed to the state championship for the first-time in three years after defeating West Jessamine 3-0 in the semifinals Wednesday night at Lexington’s Frederick Douglass High.

Ashley Durik and Estelle Gabriel had one goal apiece while Brielle Heuglin finished with a goal and an assist.

The Valkyries defense was led by Amanda Issacs who stopped one of the Colts six shots.

Sacred Heart fired 12 shots at West Jessamine’s Anna Rexford (three saves).

The Colts were the two-time defending state champs.  

Heuglin made 1-0 with a shot from 35 yards out in the 24th minute.

Gabrielle added to the lead with a goal on a free-kick in the corner of the box in the 35th minute.

Durik determined the final score when she tapped in a through ball from Heuglin in the the 61st minute.

The Valkyries will face Highlands in the state finals Saturday at 6 p.m. at Frederick Douglass High.
