History was made Saturday when St. Xavier’s baseball team dispatched Highlands 10-6 in the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament.

With their eighth state title, that’s the most in Kentucky history, and Owensboro is second with six, but hasn’t won the whole thing since 1987, 31 years ago.

The Tigers also won their third championship in five years joining an elite class as a baseball state title is perhaps the most difficult and random sport to win.

Ashland Blazer, Lafayette, Manual, and Pleasure Ridge Park are the only other program in KHSAA history to have ever won three titles in five years or less.

Only 10 programs have three championships in their trophy case since the KHSAA started sponsoring baseball in 1940.

It was also the Tigers 18th trip to the state tournament, PRP also made their 18th trip to the state tourney tying Ashland Blazer and Newport Central Catholic for the second most trips all-time.

Owensboro has the most with 22 trips, but last made it to the big show in 2009.

With the Tigers winning four games, they now own a 35-10 record at the state tournament since their first trip in 1942; the number of wins is five more than Owensboro who has the second most with 26 since making their first trip in 1953.
