Sievert hired as DeSales head baseball coach

DeSales athletic director Don Bowers announced Tuesday that he has named Tim Sievert as their next head baseball coach.

Sievert has been the pitching coach for DeSales the past seven years and was a part of the staff that took the Colts to three straight Sixth Region championship games.

“To finally be named the head coach, what an honor,” Sievert said. “As an assistant coach you always look forward to be the guy in charge. You always try to think what if I had done or what if I had done this.”

His son Trevor will be a senior next year.

“I will get to coach my son,” Sievert said. “That will be something else.”

The Colts had been led by T.J. Cataldo, who stepped down for personal reasons, the past five seasons.

“T.J. has done a great job,” Sievert said. “He has us in a spot where we’re a contender in the Sixth Region year after year.”

DeSales went 17-16 last and lost 9-1 to North Bullitt in the first round of the Sixth Region Tournament.

“I’m really looking forward to getting to know the guys on a different level,” Sievert said. “That’s probably what I bring the most. I’m one of those guys who likes the kids.”

Sievert has ran the fall program for the past few years and will continue to do so.

“We’ve more this offseason that we have ever done,” Sievert said. “We usually don’t do anything during the summer. I think it will be a smooth transition with the boys. I know their positives, I know their negatives”

The new coach has a simple message to those who are excited for opening day next March.

“We have a lot of young talent in our program,” Sievert said. “What we have to do is get them mentally ready to play high school baseball. Get them to understand what a quality at-bat is and for our pitchers to throw strikes. We’re going to be talented and young so we have to really work on our fundamentals.”
