The Bellarmine University baseball team has added five student-athletes in the late signing period, two of whom are local products, and three transfers. They include Trinity (Ky.) High School's Dylan Byerly, Martha Layne Collins (Ky.) High School's Robert Sproul, Woodford County (Ky.) High School graduate and The Citadel transfer Jack Ockerman, Bryan (Ohio) High School and Tiffin University transfer Deylen Miley, and Shane Barringer, a Saratoga Springs (NY) native and transfer from Siena College.

This is Head Coach Larry Owens' fifth recruiting class with Bellarmine and second with Assistant Coach Nick Eversole as the recruiting coordinator. The Knights went 38-19 last season and earned a second consecutive berth in the DII NCAA Tournament.

Dylan Byerly

IF/5'10/165/Trinity High School (KY)

Byerly joins several high school teammates from Trinity in joining the Knights. A two-year starter at second base, Byerly was an important player on the 2017 and 2018 teams that combined for a 59-13-2 record. As a junior in 2017, Byerly was named All-District and All-Region while batting .390 with 13 stolen bases. In 2018, he hit .322 while receiving All-District acclaim.

Owens on Byerly: "Dylan is an exciting and dynamic player as his speed and athletic ability will open doors for him on the infield and in the outfield if needed. It was fun to watch him develop over the past couple of years and will be even more exciting to see him develop in a Knights uniform."

Eversole on Byerly: "Dylan's abilities to hit to all fields, move runners and steal bases are what will make him a productive college hitter. He can also play several positions defensively, and he'll do whatever it takes to help the team. We're very confident in his abilities and his attitude toward becoming a great player and also a great teammate."

Robert Sproul

OF/6'0/165/Martha Layne Collins High School (KY)

Sproul will join the Knights this fall after putting together a very impressive high school career. A four-year starter, he broke the school record for hits, doubles, triples, RBI, runs scored and stolen bases. The left-handed hitter made two All-District teams and two All-Region teams during his four years. While in high school, Sproul also lettered in swimming, soccer and cross country.

Owens on Sproul: "Robert is an accomplished hitter with above-average speed, which can give our opponents many things to defend. Speed never slumps and it has always been a tool we value. We are very excited Robert chose to join our university and ball club."

Eversole on Sproul: "We're very excited about the addition of Robert to our team this year. Robert has achieved a lot as a baseball player, and he's also had success in several different sports. He's very athletic with a knack for hitting and we're confident he will continue to improve as an all-around player and help our team."

Jack Ockerman

LHP/5'10/155/Woodford County High School (KY), The Citadel

A Woodford County graduate in 2017, Ockerman had a remarkable senior season. He compiled an ERA of 1.04 with 85 strikeouts as a pitcher. He also batted .428 and stole 39 bases. After a redshirt season with The Citadel, Ockerman will be joining the Knights this fall.

Owens on Ockerman: "Jack is a left-handed pitcher and we all know you can't have enough of them. We see Jack being able to help our ball club immediately as he can provide some stability in the middle of games. He is a strike thrower with the ability to spin it. We've had success in developing pitchers and we feel Jack will develop nicely and is a great addition to our pitching staff."

Eversole on Ockerman: "We're really excited to add Jack to our pitching staff this year. He's a strong competitor with great command of several pitches. We know that he has a strong work ethic, and we are very excited to see him develop here at Bellarmine."

Deylen Miley

RHP/IF/6'2/200/Bryan High School (OH), Tiffin University

Miley joins Bellarmine after two years with Tiffin University. In 2017, Miley appeared in eight games on the mound, seven of which were as a relief pitcher. In 2018, he had 12 appearances, throwing 12 innings and allowing only one run while tallying 12 strikeouts. He also had 21 at-bats while at Tiffin.

Owens on Miley: "Deylen is a two-way player that we feel can make an immediate impact primarily on the mound as well as give us options defensively and at the plate. Deylen has the stuff and arm strength that give him the ability to start for us on the weekends or provide back-end relief. Players like Deylen are of great value to teams like ours, and we are excited to see him in action this fall."

Eversole on Miley: "It's very difficult to hit, play defense and pitch at the college level, but we believe Deylen is capable of doing all three here at Bellarmine. He's an athletic, versatile defender and can hit with power to all fields. He can also compete for a lot of innings for us, so we're looking forward to his remaining two years here."

Shane Barringer

LHP/6'4/200/Saratoga Springs (NY), Siena College

A native of Saratoga Springs in New York, Barringer joins Bellarmine after two years with Siena College.

Owens on Barringer: "Shane will be one of seven to eight pitchers we see competing for a starting spot for us on the weekends. Shane brings size, stuff and experience to our already accomplished pitching staff. We feel he is a frontline arm in our league, and I look forward to working with him."

Eversole on Barringer: "Shane certainly has the ability to help our team right away. We think he has the stuff to compete for a starting spot, and he has the right approach toward pitching. I'm really excited to see what the future holds for him and hopeful he can positively impact our pitching staff over the next two years."
