On Tuesday night, Assumption defeated Holy Cross 68-37 at home on senior night.

Holy Cross opened up with a 7-2 early lead after Jordan Scroggins’ pair of buckets, but Assumption head coach Stacy Pendleton wasn’t surprised. “We started the four seniors and they’ve never started together”, he said, “not only were they possibly playing out of position, but they were emotional.”

Assumption would soon calm down; Maddie Nalley’s midrange jumper gave them their first lead of the game with 1:45 left in the first.

The second quarter was all about Payton Cronen; the junior guard scored 11 of her 15 points in the quarter after nailing three triples. “Her teammates really look for her”, Pendleton said, “they want to set her up for that shot because they’re such an unselfish bunch.”

The defense really set the tone for Assumption on Tuesday night. “We set a goal to get 40 deflections”, Pendleton said, “we had 43 deflections and 16 steals (for the game); we disrupted their offense all night.”

The Rockets would continue to pile it on in the second half. A three-pointer from Lily Harlow gave Assumption its largest lead of the night, up 62-36 with less than two minutes to play. Harlow, Abby McQueary, Sydney Young, Maggie Metzger stepped off the court victorious in their last home game.

“These young ladies (seniors) have been phenomenal”, Pendleton said, “they work hard in practice and they’re all just high-character people, so they’ve set the tone for the future for us to come.”

Along with Cronen, Nalley and Harlow had 11 and nine points respectively, to pace Assumption. Jordan Scroggins led all scorers with 16 for Holy Cross.

The Cougars drop to 8-14 and will return to action on Thursday when they travel to CAL. For the Rockets, they move to 13-12 and will also play Thursday, on the road at Collegiate.

“We’re trying to pick up our defensive effort and get better with our offensive execution in the half court”, Pendleton said, “I don’t think we did very well with that, but give Holy Cross credit. Their defense was pretty good; they got up in us and tried to disrupt us from running the offense.”
