Last season, the Assumption Rockets were one of the top hitting teams in the seventh region; on Tuesday evening, they showed that it could be more of the same this year. The seventh region runners-up held off Eastern 12-7 behind a dominant offensive performance.

“Offensively we did a good job tonight”, Assumption head coach Lisa Pinkston said, “There was a couple innings in the middle that I wasn’t really pleased with; our focus at times lacked and I told the team after the game that in those times, you can’t let the defense trickle into the offense.”

The Rockets recorded 14 hits, three coming from senior shortstop Maggie Metzger. After recording the team’s first hit, Metzger scored on a RBI single from Ashton Dowdy.

“I was happy about how we attacked good pitches”, Metzger said, “it showed our offensive strength.”

An inning later, fellow senior Sydney Young cranked a grand slam to extend the Assumption lead to 7-0.

However, the Eagles would make it interesting. A pair of two-run homeruns in back-to-back innings from Tedi Nunn pulled Eastern within 8-6. Four straight Assumption base hits in the bottom of the sixth inning, capped off by a two-run RBI double by Olivia Pastin, put the game away.

Metzger finished 3-for-4 with two singles, a double, and three runs scored. Dowdy also finished 3-for-4 with three singles and two RBI.

Olivia Casey (1-0) pitched four innings, giving up only four hits and one run.

Eastern was led by Nunn, who went 2-for-4 with two homeruns and four RBI, and Molly Probus 3-for-4 with two RBI. Madison Shipley (0-1) pitched all six innings, giving up 14 hits and 12 runs.

The Rockets will return to action on Wednesday when they host Green Bay Metro from Wisconsin. Eastern will also play Wednesday, going on the road against Holy Cross.

Despite it being the first game, Pinkston sees the significance in this victory. “Eastern is always in there (postseason contention)”, she said. “Dean Taylor has been coaching the game for a long time. He’s a great coach and he always gets his teams prepared for the postseason.”

It is a long season, but Assumption has their sights set on making it to the state tournament, especially with the senior class that they have. “As freshman that has always been our goal and now as four seniors, we are working towards it”, Metzger explained.
