Fern Creek scored two runs in the first inning and that proved enough as the Tigers edged DeSales 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the Sixth Region Tournament, Saturday.

"I think the thing was we responded with that run and they (Fern Creek) weren't relaxed anymore," said DeSales coach Tim Sievert. "I felt like it was a ball game from then. We bunted well. We got guys in scoring position."

Fern Creek (24-7) advances to play No. 18 PRP (24-9) a winner over Bullitt Central 10-0.

The Tigers rode the right arm of junior Kaleb Corbett (6-3) who has committed to the University of Louisville. He allowed six hits, one run striking out eight and walking two. He also hit a batter.

"It's always nice to have some runs behind me. But for me I really don't try to pay attention to the scoreboard. I just try to compete every pitch. Go out throw strikes and let my defense work behind me."

DeSales got an outstanding pitching effort from senior Garrett Mathews (3-7) who settled down after a rocky first inning. Mathews took the loss but pitched six strong innings.

Mathews who has signed with Spalding University pitched six innings allowing two runs, six hits, striking out seven while walking two. He had a wild pitch. Mathews threw 100 pithes, 56 for strikes. The senior right hander had a temperature of 102 degrees before the game but gutted it out.

"I was kind of like feeling kind of weak," said Mathews. "I had to just keep pounding the ball in there. I was mixing my change up a little bit. The seams weren't very high so my braking ball wasn't breaking very much. So I just threw the change up every once in a while and they couldn't hit it."

Fern Creek whose only two losses this season in the region were to No. 13 Bullitt East scored two runs in the first. Presley Armstrong open the game with a single and eventually scored on a Mathew wild pitch.

Kyle Winslow walked and scored on Corbett’s single for a 2-0 lead.

DeSales (14-21) scored a run in the bottom of the inning when Mathews ground out scored Jayden Scroggins. Jason Bassett was hit by a pitch and Drew Smith doubled to right centerfield. Noah Lawless struck out for the third out.

Fern Creek scored two runs in the seventh with two outs when Isiah Noland's single scored Armstong and Winslow for a three run lead.

DeSales fought back in the bottom of the seventh Shane Tinsley singled and Evan Hulsmeyer singled but Corbett induced Mathews to foul out to third ending the game.
