St. Xavier picked a bad night to play its poorest game of the season. Butler rolled to an impressive 68-50 win over the Tigers in the first round of the 73rd annual Louisville Invitational Tournament at Valley, Tuesday night.

The Tigers fell behind 16-6 in the first quarter and could never really get untracked. Trailing 31-20 at halftime and 46-31 late in the third quarters, Butler put the game away with a 9-0 spurt to start the fourth quarter.

"Give Butler credit. They came out with more intensity and fire," said St. X coach Kevin Klein. "They played really like they wanted to get to the semifinals of the LIT. They made shots. They made plays and they defended."

Butler (9-5) was led by Jacob Lamb's 21 points and six rebounds. Lamb made seven of 11 shots which included four of five three point baskets. Trey Minter added 14 points two rebounds and three assists.

The Bears shot a sizzling 55.3 percent from the field (26 of 47) which included seven of 14 three point baskets. Butler had 14 assist and only nine turnovers.

St. X (12-4) shot just 36.2 percent (17 of 47) from the floor and five of 18 three point shots. Nick Mosley led the Tigers with 10 points and four rebounds. Simon Smith added eight points and 12 rebounds.

"We've played a lot of athletic teams and Butler is definitely a very athletic team," said Klein. "We did not have the hustle and intensity and toughness that I've seen these guys show for our first 15 games of the year.

"We've got to figure why are approach tonight was not likes it's been," said Klein. "It was a night where we were trying a lot of different things to get back in it. Butler played with more effort. More hustle."

Butler advances to play Ballard in the quarterfinals, Wednesday at 5 p.m.
